Our world is a complex place, particularly when abstract principles are hard to follow when you have cognitive disabilities. Making science relevant, engaging and meaningful drives our curriculum.

Differentiation of the National Curriculum occurs to ensure our pupils access age-related science topics, ensuring what we teach builds on their functional skills and functional understanding of our world and our lives.

Biology, Physics and Chemistry

The practical application of these subjects is our focus, to ensure their relevance in our lives. However, our curriculum is not limiting to just functionality. The wonder of the solar system can inspire and relate to spirituality and religion. Knowing about forces is tied into teaching about mechanics - cars and road safety. Topics are also geared towards needs and keeping ourselves safe, such as the values and dangers of alkalis and acids in the home, their prominence in cooking and gardening for improved crops of vegetables/flowers.


Our assessment system supports the growth of knowledge and skills across scientific principles, knowledge and understanding. Our StAPPS enables children to make progress in areas of strength, whilst ensuring gaps are identified to build on with further instruction/teaching where relevant to the child.
