Every Child MattersEnjoy and AchieveSt Luke’s school has a happy and positive environment, where students are encouraged to develop their independence skills to allow them to continue Learning for Life. We use fully differentiated programmes of study for each Key Stage, providing each student with their full curriculum entitlement in a pathway appropriate for their learning style and additional needs:
Students are rewarded for their successes and regularly celebrate all achievements. Positive ContributionAt St Luke’s we encourage our students to play an active role as members of the community in and out of school. We endeavour to display and promote positive behaviour in all our activities. Our students are encouraged to take a positive role in decision-making, building self-confidence and developing positive relationships with others within and outside of school. Our students have the opportunity to take part in decision-making processes through the school council. Many others contribute to the school community through sporting fixtures, drama and music productions, amongst others. We encourage our students to aspire to take on roles of responsibility in the school in the roles of prefects, monitors and ambassadors, representing the school in the community. Using peer mentoring and anti-bullying initiatives, the school provides an avenue by which students encourage one another to promote and foster positive behaviour in and around the school. Our ultimate aim is to instil in our students the skills and abilities required to think about their roles as responsible citizens, endeavouring to make a positive contribution during and after their time at St Luke’s. Be HealthySt Luke’s holds ‘Healthy School’ status and encourages all students to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. The importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise is emphasised across the curriculum and, in addition to the Physical Education, Food Technology, Science and PSHE lessons, we provide a range of lunchtime and after school activities through the Extended Schools Programme. Both the brunch club and the school canteen offer a wide and healthy choice of food. The emotional well-being of students is paramount to the staff and, through SEAL and other strategies, we encourage our students to be aware of their emotions and help the students to manage them. We also have Learning Mentors who deliver emotional literacy to both individuals and small groups of students through our Skills Groups lessons. Achieve Economic WellbeingSt Luke’s school’s ultimate objective is to help students work towards leading an independent adult life. This is achieved specifically in Life Skills and PSHE lessons but is also embedded across the whole curriculum. Skills such as team-work, flexibility, independence, financial understanding and a can-do attitude are practiced and encouraged. Older students learn further skills such as interviews and CV writing, and all take part in some work experience in Year 11. Finally students are informed and guided through the task of making the all important choice of which path to follow after St Luke’s. Stay Safe Here at St Luke’s we provide a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where students are given the skills to develop into independent and confident young adults. We were one of the first special schools in Hertfordshire to achieve The Inclusion Quality Mark. Our Family Groups promote a caring atmosphere and most students stay with the same personal tutor throughout their school career. This gives the tutor the opportunity to really get to know their students and develop trusting relationships with parents and carers. St Luke’s is actively involved in Anti-Bullying Week each year and Anti-Bullying is re-visited regularly during the year through the SEAL curriculum. All new students are given ‘buddies’ on entering school and ‘Welcome’ packs are put together by their new Family Groups before they start at St Luke’s. We also have Peer Mentors trained by HABI (Hertfordshire Anti-Bullying Initiative), who work closely with the pastoral team. We have an active School Council with representatives from all Family Groups, regardless of additional special needs these students may have. Our School Council also contributes to the appointment process of new staff to the school. This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its children, staff and visitors.
