Key Stage 3 Owls Curriculum
For pupils who follow our nurture curriculum, all lessons are taught in our specially designed classroom. This room includes a number of different learning areas, including a reading area, food area and communal eating area. Next to the nurture classroom is a calm room where pupils can spend time if they need to. Students will spend 15 lessons each week on topic based learning.
Each half term, pupils will work on a different topic, which will cover the curriculum for English, science, humanities, art, technology, life skills and PSHCE. The topics covered during the next year will be ‘Our Community’, ‘Food’, ‘Space’, ‘Time’, ‘All About Me’ and ‘Environment’. In each topic, pupils will make a project book which will include all of their work from the term. Pupils will also be encouraged to work together in groups, communicate effectively with each other and develop their independence skills.
The teacher of the nurture group is Mrs. Corcoran.
For the rest of the timetable, the student’s lessons will be:
- Maths
- Games and P.E – for part of the year, this will include swimming.
- MFL – students will learn a range of different methods of communication aimed at supporting their basic English skills. With the help of specialist staff from Heathlands School, pupils will learn a mixture of British Sign Language and Sign Supported English.
- Arts – for a term each, pupils will participate in drama, dance and music lessons.
In all subjects, students will be encouraged to develop their personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS), to make them more aware of how they learn and how they can improve.
